No, that block was preventing them from moving. So they stopped next to that block.
It is not happening for me. All chests / trapped ch. / e. chest are working fine.
Are you using any ResourcePack or did you modified any texture file ?

All of these problems are ´cause the world is default Multiplayer, the world will not save properly.
In MC version 1.4.7 is this bug too. I lost a half of my Enderfarm. Simply reinstall the minecraft. This helped me.
