There is a related issue that was resolved where the wrong version of the .jar file for an earlier MC version was being downloaded. Supposedly easy to fix and it's done (at least that's how I interpret what was listed on that bug report). I know I did not update anything on my system today, and I was playing last night, so it was downloaded today by the launcher.
