I've never tried looking at LWJGL... is that something I should try to update? I don't know how to find out what version I'm using. My 1.5.2 still works, so maybe that's already updated. Anyone with advice on this?

Same here, 1.5.2 plays just fine. For reference, here's what I get for 1.5.2:

I am using the new launcher for both versions, just switching them in profiles.

Did clean install, deleted "versions" folder, but still the same error.
