even after reinstalling with the installer from minecraft.net, the older version of 10.0 2.2.11696 installs, which has both mentioned issues, but after logging back in, the connection error is only temporary, but does sometimes persist for more than 10 seconds, but usually less.
I have this same issue – settings are not saved after quit & reopen app (skins, other settings, etc. – always back to default steve skin and default settings).
Probably this is the same as https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MCPE-20648

I am running on a nexus 9 w/ android 7.1.1. I first noticed this issue with the 1.0.5 update.
I may have found a potential workaround:
Edit alsoft.ini: (create it if it doesn't exist) ~/.alsoftrc for Linux/mac, %appdata%/alsoft.ini for windows.
Make sure there is the following lines
[general]
front-stablizer=true
this will make the game at least play from front center, but in my 7.1 setup I don't think it's playing from the LFE, but that doesn't bother me.
