Ok I'm on land I placed a axolotl down and the water with it. It gave me back an empty bucket and I was able to pick the axolotl up again with the empty bucket and it gave me a new water source in the bucket. The old source block is still placed on the floor.
Im having a hard time believing that's an intended feature.
