In version 1.8, damage to entities and players with friendlyfire=false still occurs. However, mobs no longer actively attack the player. (the player can still attack mobs on the same team, and skeleton arrows, creeper explosions, etc still damage entities/players on the same team).
Since friendly fire affects tnt that you placed down, I would assume so. Furthermore, if it does affect non-player entities, mapmakers would have a lot more control over entities. However, it may as well be working as intended.
So, is it still a bug?
And the mobs still disappear for me in 13w39b. I don't know why.
But didn't it use to show the hitboxes for the items and the mobs?

It appears that this may be a problem with the "gamerule mobGriefing on" command: tested it with the word "true" and it worked. However, when tested with the word "on", it doesn't.

Huh. I just tested it and yes, it does seem so. Ah well, guess I will have to use a couple of extra commands.
