Wow - my Realm has been utterly unusable for the past few weeks - I get disconnected just as you described. I also had a 4x map equipped. Stashed the map in a chest, now I'm staying connected! Fantastic job narrowing that down.
My repo is a little simpler - just flying in any direction away from my 'base', regardless of mountains.
