For me, pressing w+space usually works, only sometimes there's a delay between jumping and walking forwards. Pressing and holding w+space+ctrl or w+space+shift simultaneously will always make me jump in place. That started with the early 1.13 snapshots on Arch Linux.

As a temporary workaround you can use the test version of the new Launcher. That still seems to have an issue with modded versions though.
