I have the exact same issue and it just started yesterday. I was mining underground and Minecraft PE on my iPad crashed and I have not been able to get back into that world since. My other worlds all still work fine. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling minecraft and adding back the worlds from a computer backup but I still have the exact same issue: main world will not load, others are fine.
In terms of exactly what happens, I first get the "Synching Pack With Server" screen and that seems fine. Then it goes over to "Generating world Building terrain" and the progress bar will appear but the app crashes before the progress bar starts to move at all.
