Same thing has just happened to me. Updated to 1.8 last night, played it, a bit glitchy but new update so to be expected. When I launched tonight the launcher had reverted to 1.7.10. I have nothing in chests, furnaces, no armour, not even the sword in my hand. If you have updated to 1.8, double check that the launcher is going to load that version before you hit play, if you don't everything is going to look very empty. I have never set profiles to launch anything other than the latest version so don't know why it reverted. It's going to take a long time to get that stuff back.
I'm running Windows 8.1 and the latest Java and graphics drivers so it's not limited to Windows 7.
