I can generate a "Reached end of stream for" server log entry on demand by clicking "Refresh" on the client Play Multiplayer page with the old and new client launcher.

server is: SunOS 5.11 snv_151a i86pc i386 i86pc started with
screen -S minecraft -d -m java -server -XX:-UseVMInterruptibleIO -Xmx2048M -jar minecraft_server.1.6.1.jar nogui

I started getting these too when I upgraded to 1.6.1. They seem to come from a client sitting on the multiplayer server list page.

What makes matters worse, is if the client is running an old launcher they see the 1.6.1 server as incompatible 1.3 and they tend to sit there confused issuing several "Reached end of stream for" errors to the server.
