When alt tabbing out of Minecraft 1.12.2 and below, the game doesn't actually alt tab. But just hide the window, causing it to still register inputs instead of allowing access to the desktop.

You need optifine to do this, which is not in vanilla java. Not a bug, still get optifine, it's a must have.
