My children and I have also come across this problem, despite being in the same room.
Also, may be related, sometimes their worlds won't show as a friend playing. But I can see on their screen, they ARE in fact playing, and if I search friends gamertag it says the friend is in fact playing minecraft BUT still shows no world to click on to play with them. An invite doesn't work either.
