Thanks to Dan Singh's post, I think Ive found a pattern. Ive attached a diagram.

I think its important to note that some of the recipes that work with this method don't allow picking up the resulting item. I'm not really sure what the logic is behind what can and cannot be picked up though.

A (very incomplete) list of craftable items:

crafting table (resists pickup)
torch (resists pickup)
quartz block (resists pickup)
button (can pick up)
shears (resists pickup)
flint and steel (can pick up)
mushroom stew (can pick up)
iron nugget (can pick up)
