Respectfully, your comment that "there is nothing Minecraft can do about this" is unreasonable. As of my writing this, there were apparently 497 happy 1.5.x users who, once they upgraded to 1.6.1, can no longer play a game for which they paid you money. What happened between 1.5.x and 1.6.1 to make this stop working? There must be something you can do! There are many of us who do have updated graphics drivers. If you're going to state, all of a sudden, that you will no longer be backwards compatible with hardware that your users were happy playing with yesterday then you owe all of us our money back!!
