If, like me, you hit this problem but notice that your launcher is out of date don't try clicking the "find out more" link at the top right of the launcher as it does not work on Linux it will just take you to an invalid bing.com address. Instead go to https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download and download the latest launcher for your distribution
