In response to Anthony, at a quick glance, these issues appear to be separate, at least to an extent.. Both issues stem from flaws in smooth lightings renderer, however they appear to have different causes and effects. The issue shown in this bug report comes from smooth lighting issues on models that extend outside the bounds of a typical block, while in the other bug report, it appears that the issue results from smooth lighting shading faces on the inside of a normal block incorrectly. The issue detailed here leads to weird gradients across the face that go from the normal, expected lighting, to black, while the other issue uniformly shades the entire face too dark. Although similar, the title of the other big report only focuses on the incorrect internal face shading, and not the more broad issue of smooth lighting issues in general, meaning it doesn't currently cover this issue.
