Note that my friend was playing on his iPhone 6 and I was playing on my Alcatel Idol 4 Android 6.0.

Something similar occurred on my realm not too long ago (right before phase one of Aquatic was released I believe). There were two of us playing (we we're talking over discord voice chat while playing and my friend brought up the topic) we started discussing how the game was quieter than usual. Notably we couldn't hear any player sounds apart from a few different block breaking sounds, no ambient sounds, and most mob sounds we're missing. I can't really provide any proof because the issue ceased after we had both logged out and back into the realm.
