Possible reproduction - Open the launcher, open MC, close it when it's loaded, then, open it again. Should present the error.

Another possibility,
Open the launcher, select ANY version you HAVEN'T downloaded, wait until the title screen loads, then close it. THEN re open the launcher.

The reason for the 4 rows of hearts is because of witchcraft.
