I had the same issue, though I did used to have a Mojang account. I have since migrated and cannot use the later version of the official Minecraft launcher I think because it is set to only accept Mojang accounts. Whether that is the case or not, that launcher does not allow me to choose the account type like the older one did, and the older one no longer launches following an automatic update one day last week when I tried to run it.
I have had some success with a workaround, updating my OS from Linux Mint 19.1 to 20.3 (as the launcher_log.txt file said my GLIBC version was too old). This worked for me to be able to run the Minecraft launcher once again, but a patch for this bug would be very helpful as running such an upgrade is a considerable inconvenience. I am attaching the redacted form of the launcher_log.txt file.
