Can confirm. Still happening in 1.21.8.

I still can't log in. Been like this for at least 18 hours.
The Launcher reports no login problems and welcomes me, reading my IGN name correctly.

  • I've tried on both macOS and Windows on different computers.

  • Relogging, rebooting, reinstalling with the same result.

After updating to 1.14.4 this is suddenly an issue again. I've flown circles around my small island, usually beaming with aquatic life – now all I see is the occasional drowned; no dolphins, no fish, no squid.

Our squid farm, that was producing ink like crazy in 1.14.3 has yet to produce one sac.

Multiplayer server, 1.14.4

[EDIT] Must have been some temporary hickup directly following the update, now everything works as normal again. Oceans and rivers are again full of life!

My experience is just like all of yours, with the exception that this bug hasn't happened since we lowered the server view distance from 16 to 10.

One world that was created a 1.14 snapshot and one world that was created in 1.13.2 and upgraded – both of which has no issues with the lighting bug anymore.

It would be interesting to see if people can report their server view distance and find some correlation... maybe?

We started a new world during the snapshots and experienced this bug a lot through the pre-releases, making it very hard to play and build sustainable structures due to mobs spawning.

We tried the fix suggested over and over again, just to experience the issue coming back and sort of spreading to new chunks. Been following this issue since only a couple of watchers and has seen it grow and impact so many people.

Due to the overall performance of chunk loading, making elytra flying almost impossible, relying heavily on Nether portals for transportation, we decided to upgrade our server at CubedHost to see if it would get better. Tweaking GC settings and running the eraseCache every now and then, things didn't get better until we lowered our server View Distance on a wim, from 16 to 10. And presto, chunks that have been dark before now works and we have yet to experience the issue again.

I really hope this experience can help Georgii or some other developer so that we can safely rely on light sources again to stop mob spawning – which to me is a core mechanic of the game, that is now broken. So looking forward to 1.14.1! Go team!

Glad this was reopened. So annoying and makes the Minecraft chat almost unusable.

There are no references to lwjgl in my launcher_profiles.json.

@David
What file are you editing?

EDIT. I've tried the /versions/*.json file both the 1.6.4 release and the latest snapshot without any result.

Alexander, do you mind posting instructions on how you did that?
The older version did in fact download, but it seems it's not used and umlaut characters still won't show. Seems like my json-file is overwritten on each launch.

  1. diff minecraft_server.13w39a.jar minecraft_server.13w39a.jar.1

  2. Binary files minecraft_server.13w39a.jar and minecraft_server.13w39a.jar.1 differ
    Sneaky. 🙂
