I saw that method, didn't work for me. Updating the files just crashed the game upon startup.

Ahhh, from helpful minecraftwiki, the game itself says "Build a portal to the Nether". The actual requirements is to enter a Nether Portal. Although it says wrong, you must look at the actual requirements, not to just build a portal, additional steps may be required without you knowing.
