Same problem, gen1 iPad, my two kids love playing and i sometimes join in on my iPhone, but the iPad1 no longer functions creating a fun meltdown wherever we play. Freezes on launch or immediately after entering game. Previously we had enjoyed many hours of playing together

Clean install and reboot didn't help. But, indeed airplane mode did fix single player mode which is at least a half solution for now.
