i was able to find a way to move it back far enough, leaving a 2 block gap with a trap door to prevent him from walking into it, so they can't put the seeds in the composter, while allowing the villager to believe they can still pathfind to it.
without the composter in place, the villager does not farm. if he can't pathfind to it, he doesn't work
