I also have encountered this bug. I find it most often standing close to a hopper pointing down into a furnace and slowly towards the left (counter clockwise) until the hopper is about to fade into the periphery. before it it is out of line of sight however, all non air blocks become completely transparent and I can see the sun or moon rising well below the actual horizon.
