"wait for 12 hours" while Mojang – i mean, Microsoft – quietly fixes whatever it was they broke in their launcher without a single peep to acknowledge the problem, is not an acceptable solution. but with teh shift towards removing resources from Java Edition, and pumping up their console and Pocket Edition efforts as well as monetizing plushies and whatnot, i think this will only get worse.

I'm using MultiMC (open source launcher) now, and i dont care if the Mojang launcher is fixed or not.

MultiMC SO MUCH better, all around. faster. configurable, it manages all your forge versions and mods in a way that makes sense. I can't believe i didnt know about this til now. Goodbye crappy Mojang launcher.

confirm: within the past 18 hours, and no changes to my clients, Minecraft 1.12.2 no longer launches with Ubuntu 14.04 (32 bit), Ubuntu 16.04 (32 bit), or Ubuntu 17.04 (64 bit). these are three separate machines that were all working yesterday. the error is exactly as described in this bug report for all three machines.

Ubuntu 14.04 also does not launch the latest snapshot 17w43a, though it gives different error. the error is "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: Failed to locate library: liblwjgl32.so"

note that the minecraft launcher for my windows 8 laptop does continue to work as expected.
