High render distance causes long Nether loading

With render distance set to 24, loading into the nether takes 60-70 seconds. Turning render distance down to 10-12 reduces load time to ~10 seconds.

In addition, with higher render distance, nether has trouble loading certain chunks (see attached screenshots). This loading delay/hitching can last over a minute. If you're on a minecart when the hitching occurs, the cart stops dead and does not resume moving when chunks finally load.

I understand that higher render distance can cause performance issues, however, this was not an issue before the last update or possibly the one before that (problem first appeared in February, not sure what version).

All players on my server are experiencing this problem, regardless of platform (Windows and iOS). Issue occurs with RTX on or off. Issue does not occur in offline version of world, server (BDS) only.

Been almost a year since this issue began, updating with the latest: Reducing render distance still solves nether load time, however, now, even with RTX off and render distance set as low as possible (5 chunks), playing in the nether is impossible due to chunks frequently taking 30+ seconds to load.

Also experiencing this issue on the server I play on.

With this issue having migrated, just wanted to comment that it’s still an issue over a year later. The Nether remains completely unplayable on my dedicated server unless you turn render distance to minimum, lower all graphics settings, and turn off RTX.

1.21.7 still has this issue, our server configuration is more than enough, but entering the Nether at a distance of 5 still takes a very long time to load, and moving in the Nether also causes CPU usage to reach 100%, which greatly affects the normal gameplay. I have tried this on both Windows Server and Ubuntu systems, and the problem occurs in both. I hope it can be fixed as soon as possible.Thanks.🙏

Same problem here, nether doesnt load, even with 5 render distance.

On my other server (with a different host) the game load stone and water instead of netherrack and lava.

Reply from [Mod] GoldenHelmet: the stone and water issue is a result of not updating your server files correctly. You need to copy all of the updated files, not just the .exe.

i'm having the same issue.. even with 90 threads allocated, render distance at 5, RTX off, All settings on low. once someone enters the nether… my server fans spin up like there is VERY HIGH usage but it still takes like 1 minute to generate chunks.. once everyone is back in the overworld.. fans spin down and cpu usage goes back down and gameplay becomes normal again. seems like nether generation is un-optimized completely making the nether unplayable.

xcomcadx: that sounds more like (BDS-19101).

Is this still an issue in the latest release and preview?

Actually it appears to be fixed! I hadn’t checked in some time, got into the habit of just avoiding the nether entirely. I’m in version 1.21.101 and was able to load the nether and take a long (multi-thousand-blocks) minecart trip with no delays, hitching, or freezing. Loading time is back to normal as well. Not sure when they fixed it but it appears to be resolved.
