Outdated server when trying to join dedicated server

Until Client version 1.16.20.53 earlier BETA releases were able to connect to the release BDS version (1.16.1).

With the release of 1.16.20.53 the client now receives an "Outdated Server message.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Load up 1.16.0.52 and connect to a BDS server

  2. Note it connects and works as expected.

  3. Update to 1.16.0.53 and connect to the same server

  4. Note that you now receive the "Outdated Server" error

You need to be on 1.16.1 client to join the server.

The 1.16.20.53 is a version ahead

That's the problem.... if they are updating the clients they need to be updating the servers too. Also I was able to connect to the server with client 1.16.20.52. Riddle me that..

BETA updates are not available for BDS. Wanting them would be a feature request which belong on https://feedback.minecraft.net.

Being able to connect with a newer client would likely be considered the bug (unless Mojang intend 1.16.2 to be backwards compatible) but we would need to know how to reproduce it to confirm a bug report for it.

Edit: Sorry I misread and assumed you had to do something more than just try to connect. I've reproduced being able to connect in 1.16.20.52

There are 2 possibilities here.

  1. That Mojang forgot to change the client side strings that prevent connecting to older servers.

  2. Or that, until .53 there were no breaking changes and it was backwards compatible.

We can leave the report open but we're not likely to get a response before 1.16.2 releases. The general rule though is that BETA's are generally not compatible with older BDS server releases.

After discussion internally this is indeed invalid.

In general, per the release notes for the BETA's. BETA clients and release clients are not expected to be able to run together.

In this instance there were no changes to the game that prohibited backwards compatibility (so the BETA continued to work with BDS), but with the release of .53 this is no longer the case.
