Endermen glitch into adjacent blocks after a long fall

When endermen fall a long way through a 1 block wide drop shaft, at the bottom they will often glitch into adjacent blocks. Doesn't matter if the drop shaft goes all the way down or stops at their head height. If the blocks at their head height are solid they will also glitch into them, but die.

This has been a problem at least since 1.8, but for some reason the version selector won't give me anything below 1.9.4.

The first two screenshots were taken with optifine, but the thrid screenshot was taken with an unmodified version of 1.10, as can be seen in the F3 screen. The behaviour is exactly the same. As in, it happens in the unmodified version and there is no reason to close this just because the first two screenshots happen to be from a modified version.

Here are screenshots from vanilla 1.11 (so it's still a problem): https://imgur.com/a/lurOa

Is this still an issue in the most recent versions (currently that is 1.12.2, or the latest 1.13 development snapshot 18w07c) of Minecraft?

Please check if that's still an issue for you in the latest 1.13 pre-release.
