Using furnace crashes Minecraft

Placing a piece of charcoal, coal, sticks, wooden pickaxe in the lower slot of a furnace to smelt some oak blocks instantly crashed Minecraft (on mouse release).
Tried it a couple of times, happened every time.

What I expected to happen was...:
Obviously, smelting the oak blocks to more charcoal as usual.

What actually happened was...:
Minecraft instantly crashed when releasing the mouse button.
