/locate AND Ender eyes do not locate the portal

locate a stronghold with /locate in the overworld, and teleport to it
1: locate doesn't locate the stronghold end portal
2: ender eyes neither

expected to have /locate pinpoint the portal immediately.
because that didn't work, tried ender eyes because those are supposed to work.
but also those were broken 😞
