Put the summary of the bug you're having here
Updated Launcher (which was working a few hours ago) has now stopped working, after a forced update "adding runtime". The Launcher hangs in "preparing" after clicking on "play" but the game will not launch.
What I expected to happen was:
Minecraft Game to start after clicking on "Play".
What actually happened was:
Launcher hangs and the bar at the bottom says "Preparing", but nothing happens.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Minecraft
2. Wait for Launcher to load
3. Click on "Play"
4. Wait forever and be very frustrated!

Yes! This is definitely an annoying issue, I hope this gets resolved soon. Mac OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan
same here...is this the Microsoft influence?
was looking for a jar file to execute manually and couldn't fine any.
Here's a temporary fix: use shift-command-g in a finder window. That will open a text box. In there, paste ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft and press enter. Now scroll down and double click launcher.jar.
Sam - you are a star - this works. Great temporary fix 🙂
Thanks (I can now relax, I had braced myself for the melt-down of my ADS boy who will come home from school soon)!
I am unable to locate launcher.jar
When following Sam's method I get a warning about "outdated launcher" and about resetting my settings - exactly which settings will be reset and which files should I backup beforehand?
OSX 10.10.4, have tested updating the new launcher (both with an automatic update yesterday and several manual updates today, nothing works, stuck on "preparing"). Edit: New launcher which doesn't work is version 2.0.799.
Matt, I just 'agreed' to reset - these are minecraft launcher settings as far as I experienced, and minecraft started ok after that (from the old launcher).
However, the issue is now fixed and I can launch with the new launcher.
also having this issue, was playing fine, went to lunch, new launcher and now stuck at preparing. Mac OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan
