Popup instructions for new players invasive for experienced users

Starting from 17w16a, we get these popups telling us how to advance, like "Punch trees to collect wood." This is great, I'm sure, for new users. But for experienced users, it just gets in the way.

First it was the wood. Now it's telling me to press E to open my inventory. I don't know how long this is going to go before it stops, but if some heuristics bothered to even just check my inventory, they would know that I'm way past these things.

This could have been avoided, I guess, if Advancements had imported data from Achievements, but for some reason, that wasn't implemented (perhaps it will be for people who upgrade directly from 1.11.2 to 1.12.0).

I also can't seem to find a way to turn this off. Is there a control for this that I can't find?

I wouldn't mind having this feature in the game if there was a way to turn off these tips. Add a way to turn off these annoying tips so I don't have to look at them.

If I interpreted Dinnerbone's tweets correctly, the conditions for the instructions appearing ought to be something like:

  • You're in a brand new world

  • The gamemode is survival

  • You haven't performed the guide task in a certain amount of time

  • You have never ever seen them before

From my experience, they do only seem to appear in survival mode, but can occur when switching to survival from a once-creative world. Additionally, my moving around before switching to survival did not seem to prevent the "please move around" guide from appearing, and it did appear in an existing world.

So at this point, it really only seems the last bullet point is fully implemented. Points two and three are only working partially, and I see nothing to indicate the first point is functional.

I'm seeing this in a multiplayer world that has always been survival. It's not brand new--I created it when 1.11.2 was the latest and have been updating to the snapshots as they come out.

I am the main op of that world, if that makes any difference.

The following changes have been made:

  • The movement tutorials will show in all game modes, but the "find/punch/craft wood" series will be skipped if you're not in survival.

    • (Previously it would just pause the whole tutorial chain if you're not in survival)

  • The "find/punch a tree" steps will skip to "craft planks" if you already have log blocks in your inventory

  • The "find/punch a tree" steps will skip to "craft planks" if you have already punched trees in that specific world prior to this update (using statistics, not foolproof)

  • The "craft planks" step will skip if you already have planks in your inventory

  • The "craft planks" step will skip if you have already crafted planks in that specific world prior to this update (using statistics, not foolproof)
