Hitting End Crystal with Enchanted Trident Does Nothing

When destroying the end crystals in order to kill the ender dragon, I hit an end crystal with my trident and all that appeared were the sharpness particles. I enchanted my trident with sharpness 1000 and I do not know if this is causing a problem. I can throw the trident at the crystals and the crystals will blow up. Update: This only happens if I am not at least one block away from the crystal.
