Horse don't spawn naturally

Horses don't spawn while traveling. I spend about 3 hours searching for them, but they just do not spawn naturally.

You realize that they presumably won't appear in territory you've been over before?

Granted searched for a quite a while and didn't find any in a new world – but for a time much less than 3 hours. The wiki says they appear near villages.

Haven't seen any horses yet either. The wiki ("horse" article) doesn't say anything about their spawning conditions at all.

It did. The article is in flux so soon after release, but i make no claims that it was right.

That horses don't spawn yet is the kind of info I'd like to see in Mojang's change log.

I did search on a new world for three hours. I searched for a bit more and I did found a few, though they still not spawn in old chunks. And they are still very rare!

Edit: I looked around a bit more, they do spawn in new worlds. In new worlds (old and new) chunks they do NOT spawn.

I started a new world explicitly to look for horses, and after flying through three pretty expansive plains biomes (with and without hills) I've seen not a single naturally-spawned horse, although I saw tons of pigs and cows. I wonder if the spawning rates might be screwed up? Either way, I can't think of a good reason for them to not spawn in old worlds... it seems like we need more study to be sure what's going on with the spawning.

A theory: This could be partly a manifestation of MC-14269, an error where horses seem to despawn in the manner of hostile mobs rather than animals. Since animal spawning is so rarely, if something does inhibit horses spawning in old chunks (maybe even just passive mob like spawn-checking frequency) and they frequently disappear from new chunks before you can even see them, it would produce this observed "very very rare spawning" behavior.

It seems this may be back in 13w21a, but all I know is they are not spawning in newly generated chunks that previously spawned horses on a seed back in 13w19a.

A official answer for this question would be very useful for us who want to know if we have to expand the server's world-border in order to get naturally spawned horses:

@jeb_ ok, I suspected that and focused my attention on the plains, do they only spawn in newly generated chunks? Thanks for the reply!

Most of the time we don't want to reset the world or expand world borders, but if we have to do it in order to get the new stuff that updates gives, it would be very nice to know about it ASAP! 🙂

Horses spawn only in newly generated chunks.

Alright. To make it completely clear, will horses only spawn WHEN the new chunks are generated or will they spawn more than once in the same chunks when players return to the biome?

Horses that are untamed has a chance to despawn so that means you HAVE to explore new areas to find any?

BTW is this the same case with the wolfs?

That was a lot of questions but I am really interested in hearing the answers of these 🙂

Thanks in advance
