I do not know if these visual artifacts found with smooth lighting are considered working as intended but as you can see the "without holes" image looks very unflattering in comparison to the "with holes image". I have also included an image that is a photo edit of the two images combined together to give the best looking results of the two states.

I am also seeing this issue, exclusively at wall-ceiling and wall-floor edges. It is direction dependent (N-S walls differ from E-W) and it goes away if you turn smooth lighting off (in fact for the first time ever MC looks better with it off)
I attached new pictures to show what I am seeing, along with the f3 screen for direction information. I think there's a sampling issue where the smooth lighting system is looking 1 block too high or too low in either the x or z direction.
