Ocean Explorer/Buried Treasure Maps blank/empty

I found two buried treasure maps in shipwrecks as well as traded/bought an Ocean Explorer map from a cartographer villager. All three maps are completely blank of any information or images. I reinstalled Minecraft and now the maps function as regular maps – they only display the area I'm in and have traversed, with no markers and all are identical as a result.

Attached are photos of the blank map, and of the map behaing as an empty map after reinstalling.

I also play on a survival multiplayer server and have been able to use the maps successfully to locate buried treasure there.

The fact that you started to have this after reinstalling Minecraft highly suggest the problem is on your side. Without any further information, we cannot unfortunately understand or reproduce the issue.

I had the problem before I reinstalled.

Yesterday morning: Buried Treasure Maps/Ocean Explorer Maps were completely blank.

Reinstalled yesterday afternoon.

Yesterday night: Buried Treasure Maps/Ocean Explorer Maps now function as normal/empty maps.

I did find an old bug report via searching and this person had something similar to my issue: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-141623 but not 100% the same.

MC-141623 is invalid as empty maps are part of treasure chests. This does not match your issue. EDIT: actually, this matches partially your issue with empty treasure maps, yes. finding empty maps is intended when you don't have treasure chests to find nearby. However it does not match your issue with ocean explorer map.
In order to pursue the investigation, you can try these 2 steps:

  • Force a crash of your game by pressing CTRL+C for 5 seconds, and attach to this report the crash report you'll find in your crash folder.

  • Attach to this report a zip of your world.

Well I don't know what happened BUT the next shipwreck I found, the map worked. It didn't retroactively correct the other maps I had found (they're still blank.normal) but as you can see I was able to find the treasure. Yay! I don't know what happened and clearly I'm useless at speculating, lol! The only mods I use are minimaps so maybe there was something that the fresh install corrected.

Thanks for your patience and help, on the upside I now know how to force a crash report if I need to 🙂

I don't know if I can close this myself but it can be closed!!!

I am experiencing a similar bug in 1.16 snapshot 20w20b. I bought 3 ocean explorer maps from a villager, and they all acted like normal empty maps, except the arrow that shows the players location was invisible.
