Villagers not sleeping in beds during the night

During the night villagers will continue to wander around, going in and out of houses as if "searching" for a bed, even though there are several open. Once they sleep they will sometimes get back up and start "searching" again. Several will end up in player beds. I tried breaking and replacing all the beds and it didn't help.

hair mine--

try putting the villager in a tight space. add the bed and hope that it connects to it. For me on java I haven't experienced this.

the villagers in my world seem to be working during night

Bay Conner

@Junu All of my villagers are unemployed, which is why they may only be wandering. (Trying to build a village from scratch).

@hair mine I locked everyone in their houses to keep them from dying. It still doesn't seem to be taking-- I'll break a block to peek and some of them will be just standing around, not sleeping.

I should have mentioned that this village started in 1.14.3-- could that be part of the issue?

@Bay Conner do you have also the breeding issue MC-157166 or only this one ?

@Lofwyr Both.

@Bay Conner Welp, the problems grow it seems. I also had this bug with a specific villager, which would not search for a bed. So he stood over night for some days until I got another villager and claimed a bed, that seems like it triggered his "updating" and that night, he finally got on a bed.

having the same problem, both in vannila, fabric, and optifine versions of 1.14.4. first world it happened in was an older 1.14 version that i updated, the old villagers all slept, but any new ones would not sleep at night. second world was created in 1.14.4 and all the villagers (since they were all created in 1.14.4) did not sleep at night, or at least very few

Edit: just did some more testing and about to do a little more. in 1.14.2 and 1.14.3, if you have three villagers in a 3x3 box with 3 workstations in the floor and three beds on the opposite side of the workstations, the villagers all go to sleep.

edit just finished more testing, them not going to sleep seems to be due the the design i was using. this new design works in all 1.14 versions. the design i had been using was created by gnembon for his recommended iron farm for 1.14.4 pre release 5 i believe. when i upgraded that world to 1.14.4 full release it still worked, but building it new does not.

I find that 3 or 4 villagers (usually employed) in any biome will stand around motionless outside all night rather than continue searching for a bed. These villagers will instantly go to a bed and sleep if you place a bed down near them. This is an indication that they are ready to sleep but can't find a bed on their own. Often they are standing at the back or side of an unoccupied house with a bed. When I nudge them around to the front of the house with the door, they instantly head for the door and go to bed. It would seem some villagers cannot find doors on their own even though they succeeded in finding an unoccupied house. If you take the time to direct them for a few nights, they will start to find the bed themselves but this is very time consuming.

Some restless villagers walk endlessly outside and show no willingness to sleep when a bed is placed near them. Once they will lie down in a bed put down near them you can break the bed and direct them to a house with an unoccupied bed and they will sleep. Sometimes I lead them by placing and breaking beds as a path to a front door. I have learned that villagers that won't stop pacing all night that have been recently transported from a nearby overcrowded village will walk directly back to their former village if allowed outside the fence.

Villagers getting up once asleep seems to be occurring more often. I have to place and break beds in different spots until they finally accept one and sleep. This happens in houses and beds where they or others have slept the night through before and has happened in large houses with several other villagers sleeping in the same room or in single bed houses. Sometimes a flower pot on a block seems to "capture" them and they stand and shudder in front of it until you break the flower pot and block and then they are released and go to bed.
