Break particles are created twice for the top block of a double block like doors, tall grass, or extended pistons

Breaking a double block (door, extended piston, tall grass) from the top block will result in the break particles appearing twice over.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Place down a door block

  2. Slow down the game's tick rate

    /tick rate 1
  3. Break the door from the topmost block

Expected & Observed Results:

❌ - Break particles will appear from the topmost block, none will appear for the bottom block, and then break particles will appear for the topmost block again.
✔ - Break particles would only appear once per block, and the bottom block would properly have break particles.

That's not a bug.

This is a feature.

If particles may cause you to lag, you can turn it off in the video settings.

@Stav you have a link to a dev or another ticket saying this is intended?

@unknown, please read the ticket before commenting. This is about the same breaking particles for the same block appearing twice. Not about the breaking particles appearing at all.

Is this still an issue in 20w22a?

Can confirm in 24w09a. I'd like to request ownership of this issue to update it with easier and clearer steps to reproduce, as with the new /tick command it's much easier to observe the behavior. This also relates closely to MC-122263
