The Torch is not unlocked in the recipe book when obtaining the needed materials.
You have to craft one set of torches prior to get the recipe unlocked.

Hmm, yes, it's learned this way, but it seems very unlogical to me.
Shouldn't it be learned when obtaining a coal by breaking a coal block with (any) pickaxe?
I started a new world, got some logs, made planks and sticks and a wooden pickaxes. Then breaking a coal block with the wooden pickaxe to get coal is not learning the receipe so i have to craft a torch manually.
Of course, one will make stone tools ASAP but it feels wrong...
