Hostile mobs will attack the player even when the player is under the invisibility effect and not wearing any armor/holding any item. I tested it by switching out of creative mob in front of a creeper, skeleton, spider, and zombie while invisible. All of them except the spider saw me and attacked.

I know that, but I was about 5-10 blocks away from them. When I switched back to 1.5.2 I could sneak past unnoticed.
Ok was actually able to reproduce.
Confirmed in 12w25c.
Seems to be limitied to new AI mobs only.
Bug still exists in 1.6.1 Pre-Release.
Bug still exists in 1.6.1 release. Ghasts don't see through invisibility, but all regular hostile mobs with the new AI, (spiders, skeletons, creepers), do.
Kind of annoying, since I brewed an full chest of invisibility potions.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
I can confirm that the bug is still present in 1.6.2 pre and release.
Same, comfirmed in 1.6.2. invisibility potions are op, but not being able to wear armor without effecting it makes them balanced 😞 Same as all, spiders aren't affected.
Happy i searched this first 😃 so many duplicates..
v_v i'm guessing this is bug is pretty low on the "to do" list if it made it though 4 snapshots, 2 releases and one Pre-release without being mentioned at all. any way- with some experiments i was doing in 1.6.2, i WAS attacked by spiders,(while invisible of course), but the Slimes seemed to only jump at the direction i touched or attack from
Still not fixed? Indeed weird how this bug has lasted so long, and no mention of it in a changelog, on Twitter, or anything for that matter. But at least good to know many people have this issue, as it seems not everyone is having this problem.
It's only been on the 'popular issues' page for a week, hopefully someone will get it fixed soon.
Signed up to vote and comment on this bug. I couldn't find any info about this when Googling. The bug is still present in 1.6.2. It makes invis useless in single player and limits it's usefulness in multiplayer.
I wrote a small mod as a temporary fix for this bug.
Here is a link: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1901276-162-invisibility-potions-fix-mc-18284/
I updated it for 1.6.4 if anyone is using this...
i was actually wondering if this was related to the apparent reworking of effects in general(also unmentioned anywhere); potion effects currently have had their undefined cap of 127ish pushed back to an unpassable lvl 400 in addition to some other changes i haven't fully explored- so my question is, Is it really the AI or the potion itself?
@Jamal P. It's the AI. Mojang seems to have forgotten to check for invisibility potions in the code that finds targets for mobs. It also seems to ignore if the player is sneaking or not (the old code would take that into consideration). Spiders still have the old AI code, which is why they will not attack you if you are invisible.
i see, thanks for clearing that up for me.
Hope to see this fixed soon. I can confirm that spiders and slimes behave as they should, at least for me.
Zombies can track you from their normal range (50-70 blocks) with no armor and nothing in the hand. Eagle-eyes?
Zombies are way too op in their 50 block vision.
AAAAAND the bork continues un-adressed in the latest 13w36a (1.7) snapshot. leaving creative with or without an invisibility potion causes creepers and zombies to immediately aggress at you until you leave their field of vision all together. the potion remains entirely useless for anything outside of direct PVP.
If I sound bitter, its because i am. i prize the functionality of previously implemented items over truckloads of new features that i can't trust to Retain its basic components when building an adventure map or minigame in MC.
Jamal P. is right. 100%.
We've reported this bug, right? I mean, this is THE place to report bugs you encounter. So why is it this bug STILL remains?
I've paused on map-making for over at least 3 months now because I seriously need these potions to work am I to continue working on this map.
Perhaps I should just find another hobby and delete the map, no? Mojang obviously doesn't see very clearly if they are still adding new stuff to the game without fixing the already implemented stuff, so I might as well assume this isn't going to be fixed in the near future.
Seriously, many people have now reported this bug. What more do you need until you finally get to fixing this!?
It shouldn't be that hard to fix. So hopefully they'll fix it before the next major release.

present in 13w37b :/
and I agree that it's silly that mojang hasn't fixed this yet. Everyone who plays vanilla is affected by this. Out of all the bugs and glitches 1.6 introduced, this seems like one of the easiest to resolve.
Still present in 13w38a.
Two days from now will mark the 100-day anniversary of this bug being reported. I'm going to throw a party with a banner with invisibility potions on either side, and giant text that reads "100 days! Still not fixed!" There will be grey glowing drinks for everyone (still figuring that part out), served in glass bottles, and big sheets will be provided so we can pretend to be invisible when we actually are not, hence the overall theme of the party.
Can't wait 'til we hit 200. We'll have to upscale the party to include more old will-never-be-fixed bugs like MC-10099, MC-13497, and MC-5461.
hurr... if this was a server party I'd go. dang. if i had more time i'd have made a "They-can-smell-your-Hope-and-are-coming-to-eat-it" commemorative picture for the special occasion. maybe submit it to the next calendar or T-shirt competition....
;_;
also when the heck did 1.6.3 &1.6.4 happen? surprise surprise, i can't find a change log for it.
I'm making a system and when I approached a mob with invisibility in survival, the same thing happened to me.
I'm surprised! They need to fix this. The potions not working greatly affect my system. Like when the testfor wouldn't work.
Need invis ability in order to keep the challenge to the parkour course i'm making. without it, no sense having the level there. this issue is bigger than you think.
if the bigger issue is "still present in 13w39b, and Mojira seems extraordinarily inefficient" then i think we all have a fair grasp on the situation. Bluh. i know that mods Aren't actually the mojang employee's who'd be responsible for fixing this, but can some one please explain WHY it looks more and more like mobs having an impeccable sense of smell is just going to end up as a "new feature" rather then ever being fixed and NOT released into an official build AGAIN??
side rant i'm willing to bet there would be less duplicates and incorrect bug reports if a) mojang stops treating change logs like a silly easter egg hunt, and then tagging each partial or nonexistent change log update with a request to report any thing that you don't think should have changed or found odd, and b) if actually checking for if a bug report exist was as easy as checking features for a given item on the minecraft wiki. rather then expecting people to SIFT through dozens of reports with just a key word, being able to click on an item (for reports that pertain to an item) and being able to check what the intended feature is vs known bugs would be so much easier for every one

Also make sure you dont bump the mob

still present in 1.7pre, doesn't look like it will be fixed before the official release. It might be a while before one of the most serious bugs in the game gets any attention from the mojangers :/
Yep, bug STILL exists.
The main problem here is that Mojang has no clue whatsoever that this major bug is even in the game. Like I said before, isn't this the place to report bugs? Why are they still unaware of this problem?
There's not much else to do. They won't reply to your Twitter posts, you can try to e-mail them(I'm gonna have to try this as well) but basically you're screwed if Mojang doesn't even check the official bug-report website.
Please don't assume they don't check this site. My guess is they haven't figured out why it isn't working. There are coders that are on this site as well that look for issues/fixes and they haven't chimed up either. It's getting votes which moves it up the priority list. They will get to it eventually. If they aren't already trying to figure it out
"My guess is they haven't figured out why it isn't working."
Joshua already developed and posted a fix back in July. Perhaps the programmers could ask him how to fix their code?
Well, sorry guys, I appreciate your good spirit but I know how to fix it myself and so does Joshua aswell, indeed. It's a very easy thing to fix, especially taken in mind it's THEIR code.
Sorry if I come off too negative for you but I'm sure you can understand how ridiculously long this issue has survived.
@Th3F4114n0n3
The bug is EXTREMELY easy to fix. I'm an amateur programmer, and within 2 minutes of trying I was able to find and fix the problem, it is about 2-3 lines of missing code. The non-mojang programmers that find and fix the code on this site have done so for this problem before, it was one of the first comments I saw when I began following this bug.
my mistake. I must have skipped over comments somewhere on this. I don't use potions to sneak by mobs so I never notice this issue but I can imagine how annoying it is when the fix is that simple.
What I'm wondering is, with the old AI, mobs will take into account whether the player is sneaking and invisible when looking for a target. With the new AI the mobs ignore both of these variables.
Obviously ignoring the player being invisible is a bug, but is ignoring whether the player is sneaking or not intended or a bug as well.
I never knew about the sneaking thing before you mentioned it, but its probably a side effect of this bug. i had similar questions about https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MC-29778 essentially making heavy wheigted pressure plates highly unwieldy for anything other then high traffic mob farms, but of course never got an answer.
I think i'm done though. no reason to bother reporting or voting up issues if no one but the mods see it- and they don't usually bother responding to concerns beyond "confirmed" or some slightly insulting remark that doesn't at all address or clarify the nature of the problem- they might even know less than we do about it.
now that i CAN retreat back to the safety of 1.5 &1.6, i don't think i can get excited about all the new stuff in 1.7 knowing i'll have to extensively Retest every thing i know about MC just to make sure a map i design works for only the handful of people i know who would even know i made it.
Looks like it's still broken in 1.7.2 😞
Updated my fix for 1.7.2, for anyone that's using it.

Cmon Mojang... I usually don't hate on game devs, but this isn't that hard to fix. They probably don't even know it's an issue.
Confirmed for 1.7.4
Yep still broken in 1.7.4. The only mobs that don't see you are spiders. This is a pretty easy fix, I hope Mojang sees this.

Blazes also can't see you.

yus thank you for fixing this dinnerbone 😃
This issue is still persistent in 1.7.9.

@Metal Metal, yes it is, but as indicated this issue is fixed in a snapshot for 1.8.
This bug is still present in 1.7.10-pre2, but fixed in 14w21b. It would be great if 1.7.10 were released with this fix.
@Ezer'Arch 14w21b = 1.8
This bug will be fixed in 1.8
@Ezer'Arch the 1.7.10 was a release exclusively for realms not for any bug fixes or features for 1.7. They are done with 1.7 and working on 1.8.
Confirmed in 1.8.7
James, your issue is MC-10901
Mobs attack you even if invisible if you get too close to them.
