When walking onto a path block or farmland block, the block will push you off onto lower ground if there is an air space next to the path or farmland, and if there is not another block blocking you from falling off. Jumping up onto the path block from lower ground will let you onto the edge of the path block if you keep walking forward into it, but will still push you off if you let go of the forward key.
