Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
The wolves don't have to be in the water, playing 1.6.2, I found both puppies and adults can be tames but have the wrong texture EXEPT for the collar, and they can sit, attack mobs, eat meat, etc.
I have the same exact issue! It still exists in the latest 14w03b snapshot. It used to be rlly bad back in like 1.6.2 or something during the time I had to kill my wolf because it was stuck to the fence with a lead but the lead was invisible and it wouldn't die and had no shadow underneath it and it was fully-grown. I remember digging some blocks under it trying to make it fall out of the world, but when I reached that part of the world, it fell but not to it's death and was still stuck on that invisible lead. It wouldn't even move except to look at me and it had those wild wolf eyes and it had a totally different personality...like a wild wolf's personality...and it didn't even go in water at the time. I just put a grass block at the spot where I broke the first block, well, to make it sound less confusing...at the top (I was in creative and in a flat world). Then I remember sleeping in Minecraft and waking up the next Minecraft day and when I removed that grass block the wolf was gone and the invisible lead didn't exist anymore. I then put the grass block back above that spot and started building a grave :c.
And @Ezekiel It still is, and I think if Mojang never fixes this it forever will be.
Confirmed.
