That isn't well written. Do you refer to an "inventory sprite" or to the block itself placed on the world?

If it is the inventory sprite, it works as intended. Sprites for every block state were eliminated and replaced with NBT tags, so if you go yo your inventory and put your cursor over the item, there should be on purple letters (+ NBT).

That Tag implies that the state, and items if it is a container, is retained. So, if you put that furnace, it still has the elements inside.
