[MC-196285] Villagers will not pick up food to breed

My villagers and my friend's villagers on our 1.16.1 minecraft realm will not pick up any food items commonly given to them in order to breed. We have tried carrots, potatoes, beetroot and wheat, none work. the villagers walk over to the food and attempt to pick it up over and over again but cant. I can provide screenshots and video of this if necessary. Thanks.

Are there sufficient beds? (not sarcasm)

Please confirm if in addition to the food that there is a greater than a 1 to 1 villager to bed ratio:

Also make sure that mobGriefing is turned on.

Thank you for your help Galaxy_2Alex, we turned mobGriefing off because we had too many creeper holes. I had no idea that it affected villagers picking up items.
