The nausea effect resets its distortion severity when players' NBT data is reloaded

The Bug:

The nausea effect resets its distortion severity when players' NBT data is reloaded.

When the player's NBT data is reloaded, for example, by switching dimensions or reloading into worlds, the nausea visual screen effects (both the wobbling screen and the green screen if distortion effects are turned off) reset.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Construct a nether portal and give yourself the nausea effect by using the command provided below.

    /effect give @s minecraft:nausea 999 0 true
  2. Wait around ten seconds for the effect to reach its full distortion potential and then enter the nether portal.

  3. Take note as to whether or not the nausea effect resets its distortion severity when players' NBT data is reloaded.

Observed Behavior:

The nausea effect resets its distortion severity.

Expected Behavior:

The nausea effect would not reset its distortion severity.

Confirmed, but doesn't just affect the green overlay but also the regular wobbling.

I can confirm for 20w46a.

Can confirm in 20w51a.

This also affects the nether portal warping, it's the same "effect", but should probably be mentioned in the report for searching purposes.

Can confirm in 21w03a.

I've updated this ticket to mention that the core problem here is that the nausea effect resets its distortion severity when players' NBT data is reloaded. Also, I've refined it nicely as well. 🙂

This issue was present in 23w18a, but no longer occurs in versions above or equal to 1.20 Pre-release 1. This issue was fixed in 1.20 Pre-release 1.
