When opening any GUI, including the inventory menu, command/chat gui, and the pause menu, my game freezes before returning to normal fps.
What I expected to happen was...:
The game should open GUIs without noticeable lag.
What actually happened was...:
Small lag spikes happen when opening any GUI. Spamming the esc key can almost completely freeze the game.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Join a normal world, multiplayer or singleplayer. FPS is high.
2. Open chat, inventory, or pause screen.
3. Game freezes for a second when opening or closing.
The three screenshots show normal fps while idle, spamming the escape key in windowed mode, and. First spike was from spamming the esc key, the second was pressing it twice to open and close.

Thank you, could you please check if
a) Reinstalling the GPU drivers helps
b) Using Java 8 instead of 11 changes anything
c) It happens while not using Fullscreen
Does MC-170091 describe your issue?
MC-170091 seems like the fps is low while in inventory, but it is stable while in inventory. I only get lag when opening or closing, not while idle.
I'll try reinstalling drivers and using a different version of Java.
Seems like MC-178267 describes my issue. How do I close?
Hi @unknown!
Unfortunately, you can't close your own issue. A moderator needs to. A request to have it resolved though has already been made. 🙂
If you are indeed using Wayland, I would recommend to switch to Xorg if possible, since we have had recent developer confirmation that Wayland is not supported from the launcher's point of view. (On a side note: I'm not a 100% certain how this part of Debian/Linux works, so apologies if anything I said doesn't make any sense)
I am using Wayland, as my current Xorg install is broken. Thanks everyone who helped in the comments. I do hope MC-178267 gets fixed, because its now the default on Debian.
Please provide a screenshot of your game while the lag is occurring with the F3 debug screen enabled.
