Check images below here for reference. This is what I experienced when I used a glow ink sac on signs and placed lots of them and the lag gradually increased like my FPS went down to about 40 frames.

Sign Texts
This seems very similar to MC-5169. Does the same amount of lag occur on signs without glow ink sacs applied to them?

No actually

The ones without glow ink sacs dont reduce as much lag as oppose to glow ink sacs.

More than a couple glowing signs cripple even high end hardware. Confirmed for 1.17pre-4.

I checked the pre-4 bug fix and the 226966 bug is not on the list btw.

Can confirm as well, the performance drop is very noticeable.

When will it be fixed?

Is definitely still present in 1.17 Release Candidate 1. Took my FPS from a capped 60 down to sub-20s.
Can confirm in 1.17.

If this is a hardware issue then hopefully it gets fixed before 1.17.1 releases.
Can confirm in 1.17.1.

Tested with 200 signs on a superflat world, each completely full with text ("abcdefghijklmnop" on each line). I get around 120 fps when far from the signs. When the signs are not glowing, they drop my fps to about 60. After making the signs glow, it drops much further, below 20 and sometimes below 15. Was trying to make a build that requires a lot of signs, unfortunately I'll have to stick with normal ones (I can get a modest improvement with sodium, but it won't be enough for what I have planned). My GPU is a GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q if that matters

This issue occurs on Bedrock as MCPE-129748. Of course the rendering engine is quite different but it seems feasible that both issues occur for the same (or similar) reason.

Not sure how true this is but, apparently the way signs make this "glow" effect is by rendering the text 9 times, which might be the cause of the extreme fps drops when lots of signs are involved. That might also be the cause of the lag on bedrock if the text is rendered the same way.

My FPS dropped from ≈170 to 15 from just 20 glowing signs (Demo). That's terrible.

Can confirm in 21w41a.

Can confirm on 1.18 pre1

I think this is caused by the outline of the text rendering.
It's also worth to note that a black sign is more laggy than any other sign, because others stop re-rendering after a certain distance, while the black one will cause lag all the time.

@unknown You appear to be correct, the text is in fact rendered nine times for glowing signs.

Just for info:
The multiple renders (afaik 5) happen because the outline is made by drawing the text in bold letters multiple times, each time shifted into another direction.
It's bad.

Confirmed for 1.18. I was wondering why only one part of my map was always so laggy when I looked at it or moved around it.

Can confirm on 22w18a.

Can confirm in 1.19
Can confirm in 1.19.2. This issue can easily be reproduced by running the following command.
/fill ~ ~ ~ ~10 ~ ~10 minecraft:oak_sign{GlowingText:1b,Text1:'{"text":"MC-226966"}',Text2:'{"text":"MC-226966"}',Text3:'{"text":"MC-226966"}',Text4:'{"text":"MC-226966"}'}

Can confirm 1.19.3

Can confirm in 23w17a. Two faces of texts make it worse.

Can confirm in 1.20.1 and 1.20.

Can confirm in 1.20.5 Release-Candidate 2

can confirm in release 1.21, but its seem that the issue with frame drops have become less severe in 1.21. My game can handle about 4x more double sided, dyed, and glowing signs than it could before in 1.20.

This seems to be a continuation of MC-5417 unless given more context...

Not the same issue. That issue is about a large amount of signs in general causing lag, this issue is that signs with glowing text are laggier than regular signs.

I cant reproduce the issue when using the partial fix for 5417, so either my partial fix applies here or it has been fixed or I need another world example that I can load that shows the issue.

Can confirm in 1.21.2, and appears to be a much larger than in previous versions.
Before 1.21.2 my fps dropped from ~300fps to ~40fps.
Now, in 1.21.2, it goes from ~300fps to <10fps.

This is most relevant for version 1.21.5. It is simply impossible to play on servers after switching from 1.21, where everything worked fine. FPS for all players, regardless of their graphics card, drops from 400 to 60

I'm surprised no one is shouting about it, because it just kills the game completely.
