We've already been playing with the new 1.17.1 update for a while; in fact, it worked yesterday. Today, I have received the message, "Incompatible client. Please use 1.17" I definitely have the latest version of Minecraft - unless I've been confusing an axolotl for a turtle this whole time....
Just to be sure, I even reinstalled it but I still get the same message.
I am unaware if anyone else on our server is having the same issue.
I'm sure it will be resolved soon, just curious is all. Thank you!

tryashtar, how do we in userland get the official realms servers updated?
Realms support just links back to this bug tracker.
I haven't a clue how to load a specific version or minecraft. The launcher just runs updates and runs the version it's installed as far as I can tell. And there doesn't seem to be a way to download previous versions or to prevent auto updates.
A little more help would be awesome, please?
Realms should auto-update to the latest version either when the owner of the realm joins with the new version or when 48 hours since the update have passed (which is now the case for 1.17.1). If your realm is really still stuck in 1.17 for some reason, that's probably a bug with realms. Customer Support should be able to troubleshoot that issue though and be able to update your realm manually. If that issue persists on realms please file a new bug report in the REALMS project here.
Same issue here.
Using version 1.17.1 java edition on Ubuntu, while trying to connect to realms.
Works fine for local games.
Have completely removed, downloaded and installed fresh from the website. Issue persisted.
