The bug
Loyalty trident thrown into unloaded chunks stutters in the air, becoming impossible to obtain until the chunks are loaded.
To reproduce
1. Give yourself a trident.
2. Enchant the trident with Loyalty III.
3. Set the render distance to 2 chunks.
4. Throw the trident into the horizon and wait for it to return.
5. ❌ It starts glitching and cannot be picked up by the player until the chunks are loaded.

I believe this is actually MC-197646, but as the visual effect is not the same this might be a different issue. This looks like a desync.
